The Four Way Test
The Four-Way Test: A Timeless Guideline for Ethics
Created during the Great Depression by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor, The Four-Way Test began as a tool to save a struggling business. Taylor condensed his ethical vision into four key questions:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
First applied at Club Aluminum, the test guided decisions, improved trust, and helped revive the company. Its success in business led Rotary International to adopt it in 1943 as a core principle.
Transcending cultures and languages, The Four-Way Test remains a powerful framework for ethical decision-making in business, personal life, and service. It is a call to moral excellence, offering timeless wisdom in a complex world.
